Nusa Penida

Diving around Nusa Penida is just fantastic! The island of Nusa Penida is known world-wide for manta rays and mola mola, which are more commonly known as sun fish.

Nusa Penida is the least populated of the islands of the three Nusas on the east of Bali. The islands Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan are more developed, with their beautiful white sand beaches and their numerous seaweed farms, producing enough for food production and to be exported for cosmetics. Mola mola usually lives very deep (and therefore not easy to see) but during the months of September, October and November they come up to shallow waters to be cleaned of their parasites. Every year some divers get lucky and see mola mola outside the normal season. Would you like to try your luck?

Nusa Penida Dive Sites

Crystal Bay in Bali is the most famous of Nusa Penida dive sites because it is one of the best places in Bali and probably in the world to spot the famous mola-mola or oceanic sun fish during the season (September to November). Crystal Bay is recommended for advanced divers as the strength of the currents can be sometimes really powerful. The coral is also very beautiful around 15 to 20 m but to have a chance to find the mola mola you will have to go down deeper around 30 m. The site also reserves another cool surprise: a nice cave with underwater entrance with lots of bats sleeping hanging at the ceiling.

An unforgettable dive awaits you! This is the must-see dive site for all divers who come to Bali. The manta ray is a majestic and impressive animal, and seeing it for the first time is a transcending and magical experience. Many would say this dive site is probably the most famous in Bali. Everybody talks about Manta Point every day, all around the dive centres. The Mantas usually swim around the cleaning station located at approximately 6-8 metres.

Beginner divers with less experienced can try Manta Bay as Manta Point can be tricky sometimes. All though usually the Mantas here are younger than the ones seen in Manta Point, it’s an excellent dive site for beginners and first encounters with the ocean.

S.D. Point is located at the north coast of Nusa Penida. It is surrounded by a healthy coral reef with amazing sea life. The current makes a wonderful drift dive. Sometimes the dogtooth tuna and whale sharks are spotted at S.D. Between July and September, when the water is cooler, mola mola can be spotted around S.D. and Nusa Penida. S.D. Point drift dives over a coral plateau at 12 to 18 m deep. Often you will encounter various pelagic fishes. Furthermore, it’s an excellent site for a deep dive.
