Tulamben

Tulamben was an anonymous fishing village in the dry lands of Karangasem, in the northeast coast of Bali, for a long period. Its beach has black sand and is covered by smooth, fist-size rocks. Tulamben dive sites are without a doubt a unique experience. The trip normally takes approximately one hour and a half or two hours. Pay attention to road, keep your camera ready and be amazed of the beauty that is Bali.

Tulamben Dive Sites

Just 30 m from the beach at Tulamben, Bali is a World War II cargo ship broken up and is an impressively large wreck, stretching 120 metres long on a steeply sloping sandy bottom. The top of wreckage is just 3 metres below the water surface and the bottom is at 29 metres. The Liberty ship was hit by a Japanese torpedo and it was beached near Tulamben. In 1963, the eruption of Mount Agung caused the vessel to slip off the beach, and it now lies on a sand slope in 9 to 30 m of water. The best time to dive here is early in the morning or late in the afternoon as the dive site gets very crowded. It is also an excellent place for a night dive!

This is one of the latest discoveries among the Tulamben area’s dive sites. At Mount Seraya’s coral encrusted foot lie some of Bali’s – if not Indonesia’s – most beautiful dive sites. Seraya’s Secret Dive site is the best site for macro and muck diving in Bali! It is a perfect place for night diving in Tulamben and heaven for macro underwater photographers! With a 10 m deep black sand bottom, you can stay for hours searching for strange sea creatures hiding all over the place. If you are lucky, you might even get to see the rare mimic Octopus!

Kubu, Bali is situated in north east Bali 1 hour from Padang Bai & 30 mins from Tulamben Dive Sites. The two dive sites on Kubu reef are easy and ideal for beginners. You start your dive in a shallow coral garden then going down along a nice wall with a very good marine life. The current is usually very light which makes it an easy and relaxing drift dive. You can see whitetip and blacktip reef sharks patrolling the area along the wall. There is also a superb pinnacle covered with soft and hard coral. On the sandy bottom you can see numerous blue spotted stingrays.

Tulamben Coral Garden lies to the east of the well-known MS Liberty wreck and to the west of the Tulamben drop off. It is also the site where we are most likely to see black tip sharks. This magnificent coral reef also shelters numerous varieties of clown fish hiding in the anemones (white, green and blue), accessible to divers of all levels. This spot is also ideal for underwater photography. It is also a super snorkelling spot – well suited for a snorkelling session during the surface interval between dives or for non-divers. Besides the usual reef fish there are several kinds of moray eels (e. g. blue ribbon moray eels), porcupine fish, ghost pipe fish, octopuses and nudibranchs.
